Medical Knowledge/Clinical Science
Definition and Goals
Residents, by the time of graduation, must possess an adequate fund of knowledge in established
and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and psychosocial science domains to assure
the understanding of the practice of child and adolescent psychiatry.
Knowledge
The resident shall master the basic information integral to the academic and clinical principles
of child and adolescent psychiatry as presented in the didactic and clinical curriculum of the
training program, augmented by self-directed learning. These areas include knowledge in:
- Development
- Biological Sciences related to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Clinical Sciences related to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Psychopathology, including classification, epidemiology, etiology (when known),
phenomenology, differential diagnosis, course and prognosis of:
• All major DSM categories
• Developmental disorders
• Substance abuse
- Assessment Procedures including:
• psychological testing
• laboratory methods used in psychiatry
• mental status examination
• diagnostic interviewing
• treatment comparison and selection
- Treatments including indications, contraindications, methods of administration
and possible adverse effects in:
• Biological therapies, including psychopharmacology
• Psychological therapies, including brief and long-term individual therapy, family<
therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, supportive therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy,
cognitive-behavioral therapy and the combination of
psychotherapy
and psychopharmacology
• Inpatient and partial hospital treatments
• Social interventions
- Principles of consultation psychiatry in:
• pediatrics
• schools
• juvenile courts
• community systems of care
- Emergency psychiatry including:
• suicide
• homicide, rape and other violent behavior
• differential diagnosis in emergency situations
• methods of emergency intervention
- Prevention
- Administrative psychiatry and systems of health care delivery
- Medical ethics
Skills
The resident will acquire knowledge regarding the basic and clinically supportive sciences
through participation in didactic seminars, supervision and clinical discussions. The resident
must demonstrate:
- Attendance and participation in didactic seminars
- Ability to learn and disseminate relevant data and knowledge effectively about
children, adolescents and families
- Ability to apply knowledge gained in didactic and clinical situations through the
provision of care for children, adolescents and families
Attitudes
The resident must demonstrate the following attitudes regarding medical knowledge:
- Desire to participate in didactic offerings by being able to discuss assigned readings
and effectively present topics in different forums, making relevant comments during
discussions
- Participate actively in clinically based conferences and bring to these conferences
literature and knowledge from the clinical sciences relevant to the situation
being discussed
- Ability to maintain an analytic and investigatory approach to clinical situations
