Pediatric Neurology
Residents have core training in pediatric neurology in Year 1. In July and August, all residents will
spend three hours per week in a clinical pediatric neurology rotation led by David Holtzman, M.D.,
a Board-certified pediatric neurologist at MGH. Residents will attend pediatric neurology clinics,
along with pediatric neurology residents examining and presenting children and adolescents with
neurological disorders. They will take histories and perform neurological examinations and present
their findings and impressions along with plans for diagnostic studies and treatment to the clinic
attendings. The goals of this rotation are threefold: to learn history-taking of common and uncommon
pediatric neurology problems, to learn techniques of pediatric neurological examinations and to
correlate laboratory findings with clinical and historical data. The cases for teaching include cerebral
palsy, mental retardation, seizures, learning disabilities, movement disorders, headaches, brain
tumors and post-infectious, post-traumatic and metabolic encephalopathies. Additional experience
in pediatric neurology may be gained by arrangement in the Year 2 elective block.
