Introduction

The millenium edition of the Residents’ Handbook incorporates the APS handbook, quick references for psychiatrists on the front lines, and details about each element of the PGY2 experience. Last year’s version, lovingly prepared by the MGH/McLean residency class of 2001, has been updated and expanded by the class of 2002.

A few individuals deserve particular recognition. Chris Finn was instrumental in revising and integrating the APS section. Marion Eakin, Amy Gagliardi and Renee Snow also served as section editors. As usual, Agnes Sarno provided crucial organizational assistance. This handbook is dedicated to her.

Do not use this handbook as an absolute standard for treatment. As this is a “beta test” edition, errors and omissions may exist; the recommendations included, particularly with regard to drug selection and dosing, are only meant as suggestions and may not be appropriate for a given patient. As always, sound clinical judgement must be applied to every scenario.

Most importantly, never worry alone. When things go bump in the night, remember that senior residents and attendings are only a page away. We expect to be called; it makes us feel important.
